An Explanation of Safety Ratings

The crash tests used for safety ratings were designed and implemented by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Read on to find out more about the different rating systems and how you can tell which car has been rated the safest.

The five crash tests used by the IIHS result in a car being rated either poor, acceptable, marginal or good for safety. The very best cars are awarded as Top Safety Picks. The NHTSA applies three crash tests to identify a car as unsafe with a one-star rating or very safe with a five-star rating. A vehicle can be assigned any star rating in that range and may receive different ratings for each of the tests.
